Get good or get fancy

When we learn a new skill, we start simple:

• Work out the fundamentals
• Work out how to do the basics

Then we have a choice to make.

The first option, is to get fancy:

• Toy with many styles and approaches
• Go shallow in a hundred directions
• Embelish the work with various tricks

The second option, is to get good:

• Master the fundamentals
• Master the basics

Those who go with the first option can show off.

Those who go with the second option can do anything they want.
